Phyllis Jane Mooney
June 20, 1937 - December 28, 2020
Daughter of Victor and Agnes Swanson Phyllis grew up on the family’s centennial farm in Fremont, Michigan. She played the cello and had a scholarship to Interlochen. She also received scholarships to both the University of Michigan and Michigan State University. She chose Michigan State. She loved dance and worked during the college year at the Arthur Murray Dance Studio in Lansing. She also loved singing. Phyl found time to become a member of the Kappa Delta Sorority of which she is a life member. Phyllis earned a Bachelors degree in Radio and TV and later in life earned her Masters degree in Counseling both from Michigan State University. She performed counseling for the church without remuneration. Phyllis transferred from Christ the King Parish to St. Bridget when the parish started with masses at the MacArthur School. She was active in Church activities developing a Ministry of Care for the Parish. She went on to work as a lay volunteer for the Diocese of Phoenix. She became the first woman president of the Serra Club and ran the first fish fry for the club when others abandoned the effort. It was successful and afforded a trip to Ireland for Father John. In the mid-70’s she was president to the Field School PTO. She is a sustaining member of the Mahnah Club in Mesa and served one term as president. Phyllis found time to raise two wonderful children: Stephen (Steve) and Laura both of whom earned degrees from the UofA. Steve resides in Tempe and Laura resides in Alamo, CA, with her husband, Brad and two children, Moorea and Briland. Phyllis and her husband, Jim were married in Fremont, Michigan, June 25th, 1960.
