Our loving Dad, Harold Baum, passed away on September 10, 2021 at the age of 75 in Mesa, AZ. Harold was born in Los Angeles, California, to Earl and Edith Baum and was the third of five children. Earl and Edith lived in various locations but eventually settled in Phoenix, AZ where Harold would meet his love Susan and build a family and life throughout 56 years of marriage. Harold and Sue had three children, Alan, Pam and James, and that would later expand to include five grandchildren, Ashley, Bryce, Connor, Garrett and Lindsay. Alan was so excited to be a part of the family that he decided to show up on Harold and Sue’s first wedding anniversary to help them celebrate. Speaking of that first anniversary, Mom and Dad would always laugh at how they diligently saved the top layer of wedding cake in the freezer during that first year of marriage but when Dad brought it into the hospital for them to try, they found out it hadn’t kept very well and tasted terrible. Who knew that year old freezer cake would be bad?? (Everybody Mom and Dad! Everybody could have predicted that one!) Always a kind, loving and supportive husband and father, Harold worked hard to create a safe home environment for his family that was full of love, humor, and opportunities to pursue areas of interest and higher education. He loved Christmas and would spend time individually wrapping the tiny trinkets and candies in the stockings while Mom would handle wrapping the main gifts. Dad had an interesting attention to detail like that, he could appear aloof at times while simultaneously doing thoughtful little things so you knew he cared. Besides spending time with family, in Dad’s younger days he enjoyed scuba diving in Mexico, playing softball, and going to classic car shows to get a glimpse of his favorite late 50’s Chevy Corvettes. With the electronics and video game emergence in the 70’s and 80’s, Harold took note and owned and operated an arcade for a period of time and us kids would stop by after school on occasion to help. When work was done and it was time to play, the kids would focus on the latest games while Dad enjoyed the classics like Dig Dug, Space Invaders or his all-time favorite, Ms. Pacman. Dad never touched alcohol but was a sucker for peanut M&M’s or a scoop of baseball nut ice cream from Baskin Robbins. He also loved this weird green jello salad mixture that Mom would make for him around the holidays. His love for that jello salad still baffles us kids to this day. Harold Baum was a person that people gravitated towards because he was a high character individual who was warm, friendly, funny, honest and sincere. He always managed to strike a perfect balance between being appropriately serious and respectful when situations warranted it, while at the same time being a complete goofball who could make you laugh when you needed it the most. While it is hard to imagine life without Dad now, we are eternally grateful for having had a life with Dad. Thanks for everything Dad, we love you forever and always. Your Children, Alan, Pam & James There is no scheduled memorial service planned at this time. Extended family and friends are encouraged to honor Harold’s memory in a manner they feel is most appropriate. If you wish to send flowers or a card, that can be sent to Sue at their home address.
